From the Inbox: How do I start a raw foods diet for weight loss?

Filed under :Raw Food Diet, Weight Loss

Today we are going to address one of the questions posed from a loyal reader. The question selected from the inbox today was: “I would like to adapt to a raw foods lifestyle in order to lose weight. How can I start without missing some of my favorite foods?”

Let’s explore how to incorporate some of your favorite regular or “standard-american-diet” (SAD) foods into the raw lifestyle.

Raw Food Substitutes for Weight Loss

raw-foods-weight-loss-raw-food-substitutesFirst off, I want to dispel the notion that some people have that one must start at 100% raw. Sometimes even incorporating 50% or more can make a huge difference in your waistline because you are getting more nutrients from your foods and are less prone to overeating empty calories. If you decide to be 100% raw from the start and are looking for great substitutes, I would suggest you try the following alternatives:

  • Try eating fruits to give your sweet tooth a fix. You will be surprised how tangy an organic green grape really is, and they are even better on a hot day if they have been chilled in the freezer for a few hours. Other delicious sweet fruits include strawberries, blackberries, and tangerines.
  • If you crave savory flavors like hamburgers, try marinated mushroom lettuce wraps. Adding flavored oils and spices to the mushrooms will give a savory flavor and the texture will mimic meat. Adding tomato, onion and mushrooms to the wrap will give the wrap an All-American flavor.
  • Chocolate can be had in the raw as well! You have to get the dark kind, stay away from the bars labeled “milk” chocolate. Look for Organic Dark varieties at your local grocer, but be sure to eat it in small quantities as it is very high in fat.

If you simply can not take the elimination of items like bread and cheese there are recipes out there for you to make. Usually these are not as good (to me) as the real thing, and I end up dissatisfied with the flavor. I am more of an advocate of taking your time, exploring new food combinations, and expanding your palate. Enjoy the experience of going raw!

Ten Tips for Maintaining a Vegan Lifestyle on the Go

Today we have a guest contribution from our friends over at SaladSeekers.com. I hope you enjoy these new fresh perspectives on the raw food lifestyle:

I am always trying to balance ways on being a good dieter when I am constantly on the go.  I have looked into ways to keep a healthy lifestyle when my schedule is busy with work, school, and family.  Here are my top ten tips to keep fruits and vegetables in your diet when you are on the go.

1.    Keep vegetables and fruits readily available – When you are at the supermarket shopping for groceries, buy enough produce to last you for about five to seven days.  This is the normal life span for produce.

2.    Pack lightly - If you are going to travel, try not to fall into temptation.  In a small container, pack sliced apples, carrots, or celery to ward of any temptation to a fast food restaurant.

3.    Drink your veggies – If you have a juicer, try making some carrot juice and drink that instead of diet soda.  Or drink a V8.

4.    Frozen grapes are great – Want a tasty treat but not the calories?  Try freezing your grapes instead of having them sit in the refrigerator.  Frozen grapes are really refreshing on a hot summer day.

5.    Vegetable combinations – Take a cup of 3 different frozen vegetables and microwave for a few minutes.  Top with some fat free Italian or Vinaigrette salad dressing.

6.    Don’t be messy! – There are some messy fruits but you can easily slip a banana or apple in your bag and eat it while traveling and not make a mess or get sticky.

7.   Make a smoothie – Instead of spending money on meal replacement shakes, grab you blender and throw in two cups of milk, one banana and a few strawberries.  Blend and then enjoy.

8.    A matter of convenience – Convenience stores and now selling more healthy options for consumers.  Stop at the local convenience store for healthier selections.

9.    Don’t forget dried fruit – You can easily pack some dried cranberries, apricots, and plums for a great afternoon snack.

10.    Have a salad! – Salads are easy to take with you when you are on the go.  You can use a small container with your lettuce, cherry tomatoes, sliced peppers, and carrots.  Have some packaged salad dressing on the side and lunch is served.

Try some raw vegan ice cream today

Filed under :Raw Food Recipes, Raw Vegan Ice Cream

Raw vegan ice cream is the perfect summer treat!

raw-vegan-ice-cream-raw-food-diet-recipes
It is unofficially the start of the summer season, and what better to go with the summer heat than some cold delicious raw vegan ice cream! Raw vegan ice cream is a popular dish because it allows people to have a familiar yet healthy treat. It can be made from a variety of ingredients including cashews, fruits, coconut and agave. In general, the more coconut that is added to the blend the more creamy the consistency of the ice cream will be. If you enjoy old fashioned hard ice cream then you will want to have a light hand with the coconut oil. However if you enjoy soft serves then try to be liberal with the coconut based oil ingredient of your choice. Check out some of our favorite bloggers takes on this delicious dessert:

Raw vegan recipe for ice cream

Raw vegan ice cream can be made from a number of different ingredients, and today I am going to share a quick and easy way to make it in the Vita-Mix blender.

The following recipe serves six:
2 cups raw cashews, soaked in water for at least 4 hours
2 cups young coconut meat
1 cup filtered water, as needed
1 cup agave nectar
1/4 cup coconut butter or expeller pressed coconut oil
4 tablespoons vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon sea salt

Step 1 – In Vita-Mix or another blender, mix all ingredients except cashews and approximately 1/2 the water until creamy and smooth.
Step 2 – Add water as needed to keep the mixture circulating through the blender.
Step 3 – Add the drained cashews and blend until smooth and air whipped.
Step 4 – Allow mixture to settle in the freezer and serve after one hour.

If you are not in the mood for whipping it up yourself, check out Tomberlies brand raw vegan ice cream on your next journey to the co-op or vegan grocery.

How to Work While Maintaining a Healthy Diet

This man is eating a healthy lunch at work while saving money

Maintaining Your Diet at Work

Eating healthy at work is not as hard as you think

Maintaining your diet and pursuing weight loss is a hard feat. Attempting it in a busy work environment seems almost impossible. You may be forced to eat lunch at your desk or even working late hours. With these dilemmas your fellow employees may try and convince you to order some unhealthy choices for delivery or even bring you some fast-food back to the office. You must have the drive and will-power to say no and to help with this you should be pro-active in your cause.

One way to avoid these pitfalls is by bringing your lunch with you; do not forget your snacks. You may think you do not have the time to prepare your meals but you do. If you spend twenty to thirty minutes watching television, online or on the phone you can do this. You can even multitask if you’re on the phone. If you are on the raw diet this will be even easier since you will not have to cook any foods. Most companies have break rooms with refrigerators so there is no worry about storing you food. Make sure you label it with your name!

Option number one is to prepare a fruit salad. You can buy all of the fruits that you enjoy from your local grocery store or market. Cut up the fruit and place it in a lidded container and refrigerate. You now have your lunch. If you would like a salad, do fresh greens and add some cucumbers and tomatoes. You can have oil and vinegar mix in a separate container or you can buy small packets of dressing to keep in your desk drawer.

Make sure you have some snacks on hand for those cravings. You can have baby carrots or celery if you like. You can even have fruit such as strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, or grapes. They aren’t so big and will not make much of a mess at your desk. Make sure you have napkins on hand at your desk though for any impromptu guests or clients you may have to see.

Overall, you will see that you will save time and money while maintaining your diet at work. You will not have to go to restaurants and spend $10-$15 on lunch. Neither will you spend money on gas. You might also make some new friends at work by having lunch with new people in the office who bring their lunch also. Your wallet and waistline will thank you for this!

Simply Raw The Movie

Filed under :Raw for 30 Days

Raw food helps people to reverse diabetes in 30 days

I spent my evening being absolutely inspired and blessed from viewing a film! I must admit that my motivation for going raw came from viewing a movie trailer. The trailer was for a documentary that followed the journey of six individuals on a 30 day 100% raw transition. I toyed with the idea after seeing that trailer, did some research and swirled the thoughts around in my head. I even tried it for a few days in short bursts, but never fully committed myself to a full 30 day challenge until the start of this blog. All of that inspiration from one movie trailer, huh?!! Yes, the trailer is THAT amazing and more! Click Here to See the Trailer for “Simply Raw: Reversing Diabetes in 30 Days” Tonight I was able to see the film and it was even more amazing. A local raw food group sponsored the viewing of the film, and it was absolutely a blessing to watch. I fell in love with each of the subjects of the documentary and will watch it many times over to renew my faith and belief in the power of the raw way of eating. Many familiar people are featured in the film including Morgan Spurlock (Director of Supersize Me), Tony Robbins (Peak Performance Coach), Woody Harrelson (Actor) and Rev. Michael Beckwith (Spiritual Leader, The Secret). The film is only available online, and you can order it though the link here or by clicking the banners. Currently the producers are also offering some amazing free offers along with the purchase of the film, so it’s definitely worth checking out!

What is Raw for 30 Days all about?

So what has me so worked up about the film? First, the INFORMATION was so full and thorough. It made me want to research even more about the raw food lifestyle. Second, the subjects of the documentary were so transparent and honest about their journeys. The movie was realistic about the struggles that a person goes through when changing their life, and was unflinching in some of the ugly truths that go along with the effects of harming your body with food. It was painful to see some of the skin issues that the characters had from their illness and some just from being overweight. Finally, I walked away from the film feeling a strong connection to the characters because the quality of the storytelling was so great. The film was well put together and weaved the story of raw foods and education into the story of the 30 day journey. This film is a must see and gets a five star rating from me!

The “pretty person” reasons for eating more raw foods

Filed under :Beauty and Vegan Raw Food Diet, Raw Food Diet

Eating raw foods is great for advancing health and beauty

Incorporating more raw foods into your diet may sound like it is something not for the chic and fashionable circle. However, the raw food diet is actually very helpful for keeping your beauty quotient high. A lot of times the raw food diet is presented in an abstract way, with statements such as “enzymes are the life force of the food our body needs to vibrate and create” and other hokey statements. While this is all very true, the presentation of the information can turn someone away from the raw food diet if they are not concerned about their vibrations and creations! Here you will find concrete information about how the raw food diet will help you to be even prettier.

Improved skin – Everyone wants that great skin glow, and most pretty people faithfully use a regimen of products or visit dermatologists. Eating more raw foods will help your face and body to glow from within, without the help of gels and creams. Many people who eat raw foods find that their blemishes are eliminated, dark marks are faded and pore size is reduced.

Increased energy – If you look fabulous but don’t have the energy to enjoy it, then there is no reason to be concerned about looking good. What good is it to be pretty but not have the energy to strut your stuff? Eating more raw foods will help you to feel energized and make the most of each day.

Improved digestionRaw foods naturally have more fiber and will improve your digestion. You can throw away those cleanse pills and fiber caplets, and reduce your appointments with your “colon irrigation specialist” if you take it to that level. Raw foods will keep you digesting your food properly and regularly.

More money – Lets face it, the cost to being pretty can add up. Between the salon appointments, the personal trainers, and massages it can take quite a toll on the wallet. Eating more raw foods will reduce your expenses in other areas that will help you to have more money to allocate to an extra manicure or two. Expect to spend less per year on groceries, doctor visits and copays, vitamins, pots and pans, and other kitchen appliances when increasing your raw food intake.

Weight loss – Everyone knows that extra weight is aging and that dropping a few pounds can make you look great! The raw food diet is great for getting rid of excess fat. Just make sure not to overdo it or risk looking like an unfortunate starlet.

Sports Illustrated swimsuit supermodel Carol Alt has taken this pretty theory to the masses with her books about looking great while eating raw foods. If you want more info check out her books along with a few other choice raw foods selections below:

Vegan and Raw Food Diet – Day 28

Using exercise to increase your metabolism

Today was a pretty successful day. I decided to try to go for 75% raw and 99% vegan today, just to see if I can do it. I started the day with a cocoa-coffee mix (from the gas station convenience store) and a fuji apple (from my grocery store stash). For lunch I had a salad with olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette dressing and a banana. For an afternoon snack I had a cocoa packet mixed with hot water. For dinner I had my trusty Tofu Pad Thai with added vegetables. This plan only brought me to about 60% raw, but I definitely was 99% vegan.

lifting weights increase metabolism

I also worked out like crazy today because I attended a new bootcamp and went to the gym to meet my lifting partners. This added up to about 2 hours of working out in one day. One of the readers recently asked a question regarding how to increase the metabolism – thanks Vanessa! Well, the good news is that exercise and building muscle can increase the rate that the body uses calories for energy. So in essence, working out more often and with high intensity will increase your need for energy and thus increase your metabolism. The so-called “afterburn effect” is when your metabolism is higher for an hour or two after intense weight lifting or interval cardio. Also the more muscle you have, the higher your metabolic rate will be. Each extra pound of muscle you carry will burn up to 50 calories just to maintain itself! So if you are working out hard at the gym and building muscle, take heart, your metabolism is being boosted from all of your hard work.

Here are my “Raw On The Road” tips for the day:

  • Nutrition – Set mini goals throughout your journey to challenge yourself. Try for a day to get to 100% raw or 100% vegan, or some other percentage goal.
  • Weight Loss – If you are eating well but find yourself not shedding the pounds evaluate your sugar and processed carbohydrate intake. It may need to be decreased in order for your body to release the fat and build the muscle.
  • Workout – If you find yourself needing excitement to break up the routine, try a new group exercise class or bootcamp. It will help you to meet more likeminded exercise partners and give you a new challenge.

Vegan and Raw Food Diet – Day 22

Today I am not feeling well and stayed back from work. I ate about 25% raw and 100% vegan. I had toast and melon for breakfast, vegetable fried rice for lunch, and more of the same vegetable fried rice for dinner. I tried to drink as much water as possible because I feel so bad. I have no fitness tips today, except for everyone to stay safe and take care of their health.

Vegan and Raw Food Diet – Day 21

Surviving the “Current Economic Climate” the Raw Food and Vegan Way

Today I continued my streak of skipping breakfast, never a good thing. Work is still, well…..work. I’m sure every company right now is expecting their employees to do more for their clients with limited resources, and my company is no exception. I am grateful for the opportunity to still have a position in the “current economic climate” so I’m definitely not going to complain about the situation. This morning was extremely busy with very little opportunity for me to take a break, and the afternoon was no different. I was able to get out to Panera Bread for lunch. I ordered their classic salad with an apple, a Jones soda, and a brownie. However I only ate the salad, by the time I was finished with the salad I was full, and I actually didn’t finish it. Again this is not a good sign because it may mean my metabolism is slowing. panera-classic-cafe-salad-raw-food-vegan-diet-detox-travel-business
I thought I would save the apple, brownie and soda for later in the day but never got the opportunity to eat it. I just wasn’t hungry and I’m starting to wonder about that and if possibly my change in diet composition is playing a part in my appetite.

Around 4pm I had a cocoa-coffee in order to stay alert. For those of you wondering, a cocoa coffee is a packet of cocoa mix and half water, half coffee. I really don’t like the taste of coffee, and the cocoa dulls the bitterness. I will sometimes bite the bullet and drink it if a meeting is particularly tough, and today was one of those days. After leaving work and completing a heavy lifting day at the gym (back and legs, whoa!) I went to Perkins for dinner. I had pancakes, breakfast potatoes, eggs with veggies, and a cherry coke. I ate about half of everything and was full. Again, my appetite is proving to be smaller because usually I have no problem eating the full-Americanized-and-too-large restaurant serving sizes. I was 50% raw today and about 80% vegan due to the eggs at dinner.

Healthy Travel Fitness Tips

Here are my “Raw On The Road” tips for the day:

  • Nutrition – Pay attention to your emotions when you are eating. Ensure your nutrition has everything to do with physical hunger and nothing to do with negative feelings.
  • Weight Loss – Consistency is often the name of the game. Remember to have patience and enjoy the process of your clothes fitting loosely.
  • Workout – When you feel that you are mastering the exercises, change your routine. It will give your body a shock and force you to use new muscles.
